Let’s rewind back to the 1970s, baby! Picture this: California, mad chill sunny West Coast vibes, and a group of high school buds known as the “Waldos.” Legend has it that in 1971, these guys would meet up at 4:20 PM after school to embark on a treasure hunt for a hidden cannabis crop. They never found the stash. Yet their code “420” stuck as slang for getting lit.
Fast forward a bit to the early 1990s, and the term “420” gained traction thanks to a little-known rock band called the Grateful Dead. These hippie rockers would tour, spreading good vibes and, you guessed it, the love for Mary Jane. They would even hand out flyers inviting fans to “smoke ’em if you got ’em” at 4:20 PM.
The years passed, and it wasn’t until 1991 that the 4/20 phenomenon truly took flight. A group of stoner students at San Rafael High School in California caught wind of the Waldos’ story and decided to pay homage to their toking tradition. They met up every April 20th at 4:20 PM to spark up and celebrate the herb. From there, the idea spread like wildfire through California’s cannabis culture.
As the years rolled on, 4/20 evolved from a local smoke sesh into a global celebration of all things green. Cannabis enthusiasts from all corners of the globe light up, toke up, and chill out on this day. It’s a time to gather with friends, chill, hang, and absolutely indulge in a little herbal refreshment.
April 20 is OUR day to honor the herb, embrace the culture, and, perhaps, seek out and find a little bit of that elusive hidden crop. HAPPY 420!
