Most bud buyers probably aren’t seeking moldy weed. But if you’re buying legal weed in New Jersey, you might not be getting what you paid for.
A new study by the Safe Leaf Society found shocking results after testing 25 pre-rolls bought at licensed dispensaries. Even though these joints passed state testing, seven of them had dangerous levels of yeast, mold, or bacteria—far beyond legal limits.
Even worse, two tested nearly five times higher than what’s allowed by the New Jersey Cannabis Regulatory Commission. Moldy weed is not just gross—it’s a serious health risk.
Andrea Raible, cofounder of Safe Leaf Society and a medical cannabis patient, explained it perfectly:
“As an asthmatic with mold allergies, I don’t need a lab test to know something’s wrong. The reaction is immediate.”
But the bad news doesn’t stop there.
The team also tested THC potency on eight of the joints. Every single one came back less potent than what was listed on the label. One was even off by 13 percentage points!
New Jersey requires that potency labels be within 10% of actual results. None of these were.
This isn’t just about getting short-changed on strength. It’s about trust and safety. Cannabis patients, especially those with chronic conditions, rely on accurate labels and safe products.
Michael Boone, another Safe Leaf cofounder, summed it up best:
“If we don’t hold cannabis to the same standards as food and medicine, we’ll lose consumer trust.”
So, what’s being done?
The Cannabis Regulatory Commission says they’re investigating. They also plan to launch a “reference lab” to ensure better oversight and more accurate testing.
At the end of the day, legal cannabis should mean safe cannabis. Consumers aren’t just chasing a buzz—they’re trusting the system to protect their health. Whether you’re a casual user or a medical patient, you deserve clean, accurately labeled products every time. Until testing catches up with demand, it’s more important than ever to stay informed.
